Working from the ranks up to Senior Management has been a great journey for me.
When I was younger only the privileged were afforded the option to attend University, now that’s not sour grapes, it was just the way of things.
I started life stacking cans of beans and dog food to organising warehouse stock, which proved a good way to embark on one’s career. I was chased into hard work in a high paced environment, where mistakes were not treated as opportunities to improve, but instances to reprimand and belittle people and there was much bullying in my first place of work.
I rose to this though, not to be beaten, as I proved my worth, and showed that I could work with little supervision and very effectively, I became a well respected and valued member of the team and was promoted to Supervisor.
However, I personally wanted to move on from Beans and Dog Food, so I switched to office based work. I was given a great opportunity working for a Medical Supplies company. This was my first experience of Quality Control, where the equipment manufactured had to be of the highest standard to be accepted by National Health Service and private Hospitals and Medical Centres.
I was asked “What do you do?”, “Can you write it down?”. “We want to document the procedures, so everyone knows how it works”, “Just write down how we do things round here”.
This was something new, so I set about typing out a procedure, it proved very useful as many questions were asked along the way, around “why do we do this again? oh I see!…. but do we need to do this any more? Probably not, was the agreement, so I created documented procedures, for all the department tasks and I enjoyed it and we learn much in doing so.
The value gained from reflecting on how things are implemented, can be insightful, a learning experience and an opportunity to explore better methods and involve teams in creating more efficient working practices.
To cut to the chase, I went on to do this for a I.T reseller, selling hardware, software and services, then on to a Satellite Communications Equipment Manufacturer, before moving into Civil, Mechanical, Electrical engineering and Steel fabrication. This led to work overseas supporting Projects in Land Development and Streetscapes.
35 years later through hard work, an inquisitive mind, logical approach and the desire to help and find better ways of working,
I find I am now the ‘go to man’ who advises on what needs to be complied with, how we can comply with it, how to avoid too much paperwork, how to train people on how to compete their tasks, using best practice. I support Leadership teams, Senior Managers, Line Managers and staff at all levels, ensuring that they all work in unison towards achieving the business aims.
Engaging with all tiers of the business I guide, mentor, support and assist all in the achievement of meeting their obligations, working more efficiently, cutting waste, reviewing how things are done to establish smarter ways that provide time savings, reduced costs and opportunities to maximise profit margins. Assessing risks to the business and ensuring that worker’s participate and support the company in getting better so that they feel involved in the successes and challenges faced in the business world today. Deliver on-time, on-cost, add great value and quality and your clients will value what they receive!
